Move over matcha, there’s a new superfood in town. We’re all about moringa right now. So should you be too?

Just when we got used to having our matcha coffee in the mornings a new superfood arrives. So just what is moringa, why should we be eating it and why are some people saying it’s more nutritious than kale? What are the benefits of moringa?

What is moringa?

Moringa is a plant that’s native to India which is easy to cultivate and has properties used locally  to treat everything from minor ailments to malnutrition. The leaves can be eaten cooked or raw, but what we generally see here is powdered moringa which comes from drying and milling the leaves.

“Moringa has been used in folk medicine for many years,” explains Toby Amidor, dietician and author of The Easy 5-Ingredient Healthy Cookbook“Proponents claim that moringa can help with diseases, such as heart disease and diabetes”

As a nutritious plant it’s also high in vitamin A, calcium, ironpotassium and of course fiber. Similar to kale, when eaten raw moringa leaves are a great addition  to the diet. However, when eaten in a powder form the benefits are lessened slightly. 

How do you eat it?

Ideally in a smoothie or added to breads. As it comes in a powder form moringa can be added to whatever you want. We say if it tastes good eat it.
