Sarah Knight’s Five Ways To Calm The F*ck Down

Want to know how to stop worrying about things you can’t control? Then Sarah Knight’s new book Calm The F*ck Down is for you. Here she shares five ways to change your life.

She’s been hailed the anti-hero, encouraging people to stop overthinking and care only about what really matters. And in her new book, Calm The F*ck Down, Sarah Knight is encouraging us all to stop worrying about things we can’t control.

What’s the one change people can make if they want to calm down and stop freaking out?

Try to think logically instead of emotionally. What is the actual probability of the thing you’re worried about coming to pass? If it’s not likely, stop worrying about it. Or if it already has happened, what is the solution? What part of that solution can you control? Focus on that instead of on the parts you can’t.

This book is clearly not about resolutions, but instead about encouraging people to control what they can – why do you think this is an important thing to do?

One of the biggest triggers of anxiety is a loss of control, a closing off of options. By focusing on things you can control, and on the options that are available to you, you prevent your brain from going to the Bad Place.

Do you believe that people need to be a little more selfish if they want to be truly happy?

Absolutely. There is nothing wrong with looking out for yourself. It’s like putting on your own oxygen mask before you help others. Without taking care of your needs, you won’t be a happy, healthy, well-adjusted friend, partner, family member, employee, or boss for other people. They all want you to be happy!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

From my mother: “Don’t put anything in writing that you wouldn’t want to see on the front page of a newspaper.” Unfortunately I have not always followed that advice.

What three things do you think people have in their power to change but never do change?

I’m only going to answer one thing, because it is my biggest pet peeve of all: BEING LATE. It drives me crazy when people say “I’m just a late person, haha!”

That is not a real excuse. You CAN learn how to be on time, if you learn how to think differently about your relationship to time. I write about this in my second book, Get Your Sh*t Together, and I hear from readers all over the world that it really worked for them. Try it, please. Everyone in your life is begging you.

What’s the main thing people need to calm the f**k down over?

Things you can’t control. From the weather ruining your plans to other people’s opinions ruining your day. You can’t focus on and worry about things you can’t control if you want to remain happy and calm. It’s a lesson I didn’t come to until late in life and once I grasped it, things have gotten so much easier and more pleasant!
