F45 is the latest fitness craze taking the world by storm. So we sent one WellFester to F45 Sandyford to see what all the fuss is about.
F45 studios are popping up everywhere, but what is it and why are people so devoted? Well, F45 Training is a team-based, functional training facility that places a huge emphasis on the ‘three key factors’ of motivation, innovation and results, according to the brand itself. So what would Annabelle, our marketing manager, make of the classes? Here’s her F45 review.
Initially Annabelle was worried about not being able for the class, saying:”As an avid weights fan and Kayla BBG Stronger follower, I was nervous to throw myself into this new high energy group training class hailing from Australia, AKA the health capital of the world. Am I fit enough? Am I strong enough? Would it be intimidating?”
How does F45 work?
F45 training merges elements of high-intensity interval training (HIIT), circuit training, and functional training. It’s also based on four principles to make sure you get the most from each class
The classes are based on exercises that mimic everyday movement, for example exercises that use multiple muscle groups like squatting or jumping. The idea is to “unify the muscle groups of the body and to make you look, move and perform better in all aspects of your life.”
No workout is ever the same
Every day throughout the week offers a different 45 minute workout. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays tend to be more cardio-based. Tuesdays and Thursdays are weights-based and Saturdays and Sundays are a mix of strength and cardio. F45 have developed 31 different classes working from their database of over 3,000 exercises, so members never get the same workout twice.
TVs at each workout station demonstrate the different exercises so you never get lost. Their LionHeart Heart Rate Monitor also integrates with the TVs so members can monitor their progress and gain points – 45 points being the ultimate for any one class.
There are multiple trainers in each class providing a “pulsing, upbeat environment where goals are met and exceeded.”
My first class
I booked into Foxtrot and headed there straight after work one Wednesday evening. I’m certainly no dancer so I was a little apprehensive to say the least! Foxtrot is a cardio based class with lots of footwork (using ladders) and plyometrics.
The trainers gave me such a warm welcome which put me at ease straight away. Two trainers explained the circuit with demonstrations of each exercise and then after a short warm up, we were allocated our starting station.
I was surprised how quickly I picked up the different footwork exercises. They felt like an exercise for the mind as much as the body. I burpee’d, cycled, jumped, squatted and more. The 45 minutes absolutely flew by and I have to say it was so much fun! Between the pumping music and energetic staff, who are there to push you but also correct form, it’s unlike any other group class I have tried.
As I came to my final station, the rower (a pet hate of mine) I wasn’t sure how it would go down. The aim was to get our pace to 500m in less than 2 mins. I was really far off to begin with but the trainer kept motivating me to go harder and to my surprise, I achieved the goal right at the end. That gave me a great sense of achievement and proved to me how much harder you work in the right environment.

The class helped me realise the coordination and strength I didn’t know I had. There’s something special about F45 group training. It’s the careful coaching, motivation and fun that makes you want to keep going back for more. I can see why so many people find it effective, it’s impossible not to try your best in that environment and it never gets boring.
With three Dublin studios and Rathmines and Bray on the way, Ireland is also catching the F45 bug and it’s easy to see why. At €23 a class it’s not cheap but if you’re after results and heaps of motivation, it’s certainly worth it.
