Joanne Woods The Beauty Specialists

Weekly Inspo: Joanne Woods

With an illustrious career that has already spanned 15 years, today Joanne Woods is one of the most highly sought after experts working in the beauty industry, we pick her brains on skincare, eating well and the benefits of social media

As a mother of three, success didn’t happen overnight for Joanne Woods; excessive hours spent away from her family, training, travelling and studying were required. Grit, determination and a passion for her skills were needed by the truckload. What’s more, her journey towards master level was not without its tough times; shortly after she opened her salon in 2016, her mum passed away following a four-year battle with cancer. Joanne continued to submit her coursework after the funeral and eventually, her hard work paid off, resulting in the string of qualifications that follow her name today and the hugely popular beauty salon that now employs seven women, all of whom are distinguished experts in their field.

What’s the hardest thing about running your own business?

Running your own business is like having another family. I’ve found the hardest thing for me is not spending enough time with my own family at home! While travelling around the globe sounds exotic, I travel a lot to study, learn and develop my skills from masters in a variety of fields who are dotted all around the globe. Travelling makes it tricky having two families back at home.

Where do you find your inspiration?

My inspiration comes from many pools. I look to my teachers over the years and how they have learned, created and passed on their knowledge. I am also inspired by many of my clients, especially those I treat for alopecia and cancer. They all smile, with a daily cross to bear.

Do you think social media is a help or a hindrance?

It’s both. It can be such a positive channel and educational at times. Sharing moments, triumphs and also sharing knowledge and experiences can be such a wonderful thing. Unfortunately, some use this powerful tool purely for negative reasons. Whether its trolling, negative comments that are put there for harm or those portraying an untrue image, social media should be vetted. We all need to make a conscious decision to be role models on this virtual platform.

Have you always wanted to be an entrepreneur?

Yes! You are born with a need to lead and create. I have always been creative and look to those who take a chance, have an idea and watch it grow. I make a point of surrounding myself with these individuals.

What was the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

To never give up.

What have you learned over the years?

No road worthwhile is easy. Keep your head high, carry on and always keep learning and evolving. I have learned to go with my gut and trust my instincts.

If could go back and do it all again would you change anything?

That’s tough as I have arrived at a place I’ve always dreamed of. If I was to change anything would I have arrived at the same destination? I think the best thing to do is to look ahead and don’t think of the what ifs in the past.

What are your plans for the future?

Expansion and growth of Joanne Woods Beauty The Brand.

Why is skincare important to you?

The skin is the largest organ in the body, yet it’s something people regularly avoid in terms of skincare and skin health. I aim to not only provide innovative treatments to target a multitude of skincare concerns, but I also want to teach people about skin health, which is an essential element of our everyday routine.

Do you believe that what we eat and what we put into our bodies affects our skin?

As they say, you are what you eat. However, while everything in moderation is good, too much of anything is not good. Don’t deny yourself those guilty pleasures, as these always make you happy. Smiling eyes are also a huge part of beauty.

What would you love to see happen with skincare in the future?

I would like us to focus more from the inside out. Our daily lives continue to become busier and busier and the average person is now getting less sleep, while the constant buzz from outside influences means we sometimes forget to take care of our inner health. Inner health will shine through to the outer body. This is why I feel so many people take up meditation and mindfulness. We invest in beauty regimes and programmes for our skin and we need to do the same for our internal being. The advanced Nutrition programme from IIAA targets skin concerns, treating the cause inside as opposed to outside only! It normalises and stabilises the inner body functions. I believed skincare in the future will start from within.
