Situated beside the iconic Pepper Canister Church in the heart of the city’s Georgian district lies No.3 Herbert Street, a boutique beauty and skincare clinic. Owned by award winning therapist Martha Tiernan and managed by skin specialist Aisling Quinlan, No.3 offers a full suite of beauty treatments for relaxation and rejuvenation.
Why did you set up on your own?
It is something I’ve always aspired to do. I’ve worked in the industry for 12 years and have gained a lot of experience in that time. I had a very clear vision of the kind of salon I wanted to run and the time felt right.
What advice would you give to someone looking to launch their own salon?
Setting up your own salon involves a lot of hard work, but if you specialise in an area that you excel at and that excites you, that is half the battle. Ask questions. Use your contacts. The soundest advice I received was from the people around me who had also set up their own businesses.
What’s been your biggest learning curve since you set up No. 3?
Hands down it was getting my head around the books! I was pregnant when I first opened the salon so hired a full time accountant to manage the financial side of things. Now that I have a bit more time I’m getting back up to speed on the book keeping.
What mistakes have you learned from?
I’ve been lucky enough not to of made any major errors so far. I’ve tried my best to be adaptable and to roll with the punches.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
To not to lose sight of what made me do this in the first place, which was to deliver the best treatments possible and build great relationships with my clients.
If you could redo any part of your No. 3 journey what would it be?
My only regret is I didn’t do it sooner!
Did you learn anything about yourself?
I know it’s a cliche but if you put your mind to things you’d be amazed what you can achieve. I genuinely surprised myself.
How do you manage to switch off, what do you do for relaxation?
I love spending time with my family, I have 2 small babies and any free time I have is usually spent with them.
Where would you like to be in five years?
We hope to be moving into a larger premises. We are also currently looking into taking on a new range of skincare which we are really excited about!
How can we get the most out of our skincare routine?
The most important steps in your skin care routine are exfoliation, hydration and protection. Sufficient cleansing and exfoliation aids in skin rejuvenation and improves the absorption of the rest of your products. Good hydration keeps your skin’s moisture barrier healthy and protects against free radical damage. Protection by using an spf of at least 30 is the most important step in preventing sun damage and premature ageing.
What new products and treatments excite you?
We love working with active ingredients and believe in results driven treatments. Acids can work wonders for the skin. It is so rewarding to see the results our glycolic peels have on our clients skin, from acne to sun damage and premature ageing. One new product that excites us is azelaic acid. We are currently developing a results based active facial treatment suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Azelaic acid is safe to use during pregnancy and offers great results.
What are the top three tips you would give to someone looking to improve their skincare routine?
- First and foremost get a professional skin consultation to ensure you’re using products suitable for your skin type and lifestyle. Here at No.3 we offer in depth complimentary skin consultations to all our clients.
- Introduce active ingredients where possible.
- Back up your home routine with regular professional treatments in salon.
