Talking to… Sinead Goldrick

We caught up with Gaelic Football player Sinead Goldrick about her new collaboration with Camile, health, fitness and her one vice

What’s your favourite five minute meal?

Very simple, poached eggs, avocado, chili, feta and toast. Yes, I would eat this meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Do you believe in clean eating or are you more of an everything in moderation kinda person?

I believe in clean eating, yes absolutely! Not only to help me perform as an athlete but also the benefits that clean eating brings to my health and mind. I’d 100% notice a dip in my energy levels and mood if I wasn’t eating healthy most of the time.

I also feel hydration plays a very important role in keeping with my clean-eating lifestyle. I drink between 3 – 5 liters of water every day. There are so many benefits to keeping on top of your water consumption; it keeps your body and your mind fresh, helps prevent injuries, helps to ensure you get a good night’s sleep and not to mention the fact that it’s good for your skin!

I approach clean eating with the 80/20 rule. Mainly eating healthy from Monday to Friday and then treating myself out for dinner at the weekends with my friends or family.

What would people be surprised to see in your fridge?

Beetroot juice. It improves exercise stamina. I’d drink it every day during the week of a match. At the start, it tasted like soil, but now I don’t mind drinking it. Noelle Healy, one of my team mates, introduced beetroot juice to us and since then we haven’t looked back. At the time, she explained the science to us, none of which I can remember now. But I have glass every day in the lead up into a big game in order to help with my energy levels on the day. Again I cant explain the actual science, but it helps not fatigue as quick on the pitch.

Why did you decide to collaborate with Camile?

I love everything about Camile. The food, and the service. People may not realise, but it’s a healthy take away option and you don’t feel bad after eating it. It’s very popular with my club, Foxrock Cabinteely, and Dublin teammates and we would often have Camile as a take away when we are having a team bonding night.

Have you always been into the sport? If it wasn’t Gaelic what would have been into?

Yes, growing up, I was involved in range of different sports from team sports such as basketball and Gaelic football to individual sports like Irish dancing, gymnastics and athletics.

I was lucky to attend a secondary school that put a lot of emphasis on sport and I enjoyed competing and succeeding at All Ireland level in both basketball and athletics. For this reason if I wasn’t a Gaelic footballer I reckon I would have either pursued basketball or athletics as a hobby.

If you asked my teammates some of them might joke and say I could have been an Irish dancer!! 

How do you maintain a balance between training and having a life?

It can be tough at times to balance a full time job in conjunction with a full-time training schedule (which can be anything up to 4/5 times a week), that being said this is the life I have chosen. I am honored to be in a position to represent both my club and county and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I believe, if you want to do something you make the time. The bonds that are forged with team sport is so unique. There is something special about a squad of girls plus the management team all working towards the same goal. We push each other at training and pick each other up when things aren’t going well. Those memories you share with a team last you a lifetime and are very special.

What’s your favourite way to relax?

Swimming, I love the sea and then going for the coffee after. The adrenaline from the sea and sitting down for a nice HOT coffee after is relaxing. It’s a good combination of the cold from the sea and warmth from the coffee.

What’s your one vice?

I have a bit of a sweet tooth and I love carrot cake!

Who’s your sporting hero?

I have a few; including my team mates Sinead Aherne and Noelle Healy. I have huge admiration for Sinead and Noelle as I think they are two of the most talented players to play the game. Sinead is our captain and Noelle Healy is  our vice-captain; both are brilliant and are massive leaders on and off the pitch.

A sporting hero of mine is Billie Jean King, one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Not only for her dominating tennis in her time, but also her advocacy for gender equality in the 1970s.

Also Sonia O’Sullivan. I have so many fond memories when I was younger watching her compete!
