Sheelin Conlon from The Kind

Weekly Inspo: Sheelin Conlon From The Kind

The Kind has changed shopping in Dublin, so we caught up with founder Sheelin Conlon to pick her brains about all things sustainability

She’s opened a sustainable, eco-friendly shop in Dublin city centre so we chat to Sheelin Conlon from The Kind about the realities of opening a business with a difference.

What’s different about The Kind?

The Kind curates sustainable, eco-friendly products that are kind to you and kind to the planet. We’re different because we have such a unique range of brands all in one place from independent businesses who share the same vision for a better future.

What’s the hardest thing about running your own business?

Being responsible for every aspect of the business and doing it on your own. It’s difficult but it forces you to learn so much, and ultimately being your own boss makes it all worth it.

Have you found social media to be a help or a hindrance?

Social media has been a huge help, it’s how I’ve found most of my suppliers! It also gives me an opportunity to talk to my customers and show them the amazing products we have to offer. There’s a great community of small Irish businesses and makers that support each other on Instagram so you feel you’re part of a community of entrepreneurs too.

Have you always wanted to be an entrepreneur?

Yes absolutely, I’ve always been thinking about business ideas and watched every season of The Apprentice and Dragons’ Den! I’m so glad I finally found an idea I’m very passionate about and subsequently launched my business earlier this year.

Where did the inspiration for The Kind come from?

Having lived in Singapore for four years and seeing the devastation of plastic pollution around beaches in Asia I decided I wanted to make a change. I want to have a positive impact on the planet and hopefully inspire others to do the same.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Perfect is the enemy of good.

What have you learned since opening up?

Everything takes more time than you account for. And if you keep waiting for things to be perfect you won’t get anywhere fast. You just need to start and refine things as you go!

If you could do anything differently would you?

I couldn’t be happier right now with how things are going and the possibilities ahead, so while there are things I definitely could have done differently they wouldn’t have led me to this moment. I wouldn’t change a thing.

What’s next for the business?

Having a physical store has been the best experience I could have asked for. I love meeting and chatting to customers and seeing all the amazing products laid out on the shelves makes me very happy, especially when my customers are as excited about them as I am. I would love to establish a permanent store in Dublin City Centre and hopefully even expand that one day!
