Weekly Inspo: Ken Kinsella from The Source Bulk Foods

We speak to Ken Kinsella from The Source Bulk Foods about the best advice he’s ever been given and what we can learn from previous generations

Packaging-free health food store, The Source Bulk Foods, will be launching its first-ever shop in Rathmines, Dublin this December. The Source Bulk Foods is a zero-waste shopping advocate, helping Ireland to shop healthily. Targeted at foodies and eco-conscious shoppers looking to reduce waste in their daily lives, the store is set to revolutionise the way people shop for the better.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Podcasts, good documentaries, and my father.

What’s the hardest thing about running your own business?

Managing people.

Do you think social media is a help or a hindrance?

Both. However in general as a small business owner, it gives you access to your market that only the larger companies could reach in the past.

Have you always wanted to be an entrepreneur?

Yes. Ever since my dad set you Kelkin in 1977. Now I’m excited to bring a plastic free health food store (The Source Bulk Foods) to Ireland.

What was the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Never stop learning.

What have you learned over the years?

Don’t be wasteful. Package free shopping can be hard, I get it, that’s why we say this is a whole new way to shop – scoop your own items into reusable containers from home or recyclable brown paper bags. Pull your own honey, buy Kombucha on tap and refill products. I want to allow customers to buy what they need without any waste.

If could go back and do it all again would you change anything?

No. However, I wish we’d come to the realisation about the effects of climate change sooner.

What are your plans for the future?

To be as happy as possible. The store opens on Castlewood Avenue, Rathmines later this month so it’s full steam ahead with that launch.

Why is sustainability important to you?

I’m part of the ‘single use‘ ‘throwaway ‘ era. I’d like to undo some of the damage I’ve done. I’m so excited to bring The Source Bulk Foods to Ireland. Everyone in Rathmines and the wider community are welcome to the store, have a chat and experience this new way of shopping and join the zero-waste movement!

What would you love to see happen with sustainability in the future?

For people to vote for leaders who will put the environmental issues ahead of all other policies. In terms of The Source Bulk Foods, the store is changing the way the world buys groceries by providing quality ingredients and products without unnecessary packaging.
