Walking In Winter Has Never Been More Accessible As Ireland Lights Up With The GAA

Get those fitness trackers on WellFesters – Now we have no excuse not to hit our daily step targets thanks to the GAA, Operation Transformation and Get Ireland Walking.

Today marks the first evening that the 32 counties will ‘Light Up’ for walking enthusiasts of all kinds to be able to get out for an evening stroll. As we learned in this article, the power of getting those steps in each day can have a huge effect on hitting our fitness goals. However, this is often easier said than done. Especially when most of us spend all of our daylight hours stuck to a desk!

What Is It?

The aim of the programme is to make exercise more accessible during the dark winter evenings. GAA clubs across the country will turn on their floodlights, and host community walking groups, where communities can get together and socialise while getting those steps in in a safe environment.

When Can I go Walking?

The Ireland Lights Up Campaign will run for the next eight weeks, while the evenings remain dark. The campaign coincides with the airing of Operation Transformation on RTE. Over the eight weeks, Operation Transformation film crews will be popping in to catch some of the action on camera! Each GAA club can host community walks as many evenings per week as they like. Contact your local club to get involved!

Over 270 clubs participated in Ireland Lights Up in 2019, with a total of 65,000 walkers taking part.
